Death of enlightenment
What would a world without conflict look like? Where you can eat a piece of chocolate without thinking about the repercussions of how this affects your health, the piece of wrapper that affects the environment? That would be pretty darn awesome.
Would that bring us freedom? And
then what? What does freedom even look, taste, and feel like? Would that bring
us even more conflict, where we are faced with meaninglessness and are tasked
with making sense of it all. Can meaning exist without conflict? One may argue
that this is not possible, and there is evidence for that.
For instance, if we were to prevent most diseases (If we took care of ourselves
more often by simply adopting a healthier lifestyle, see references.)
There would be no need for most jobs in the medical industry, and hence a
minimisation of conflict. This would result in a lot of lost jobs, and an
inevitable loss of meaningful work as well.
Countless movies also follow the traditional narrative of the hero’s journey,
where the MC will have to overcome some conflict, undertake some grand mission,
(think Spider-Man.) To become a better person and help others in the process.
But, is there an alternative? Do we need conflict to drive us? A never-ending
cycle which feeds itself. This perception may not go well with people who
thrive on conflict. If there is no war, how can money be made in the first
place? Finance is a means to an end. Authority and power would be distributed,
and they would be left in a state of looking at,
What is.
Which may bring up enormous amount of pain. Therefore, I think conflict is a distraction from this pain. I do not mean to condone or judge anyone, but it is important to understand what the underlying problem is. I indulge in it as well. Only with the pain that I cause to myself, will I ever be able to validate myself. To give myself a pat on the back when I "courageously" overcome my fear. Public speaking, social anxiety and what not.
So, do we need to read a heap of
books to find an alternative? Is original thought possible? Is it possible to
live a life filled with creativity? To break away from the indentions and the
grooves that have been expertly crafted by forces unseen. Where do you even
start from? Do I simply need to sit down, and create for myself?
Before anybody told me how to think, and how I should be?
